Vehicles drive on the left side of the road. Maximum speed limit on major routes is 120 km/hour. Foreign driverís licenses are valid in South Africa providing they carry a photograph of the driver.

Most hotels, shops, airlines and restaurants accept recognized international credit cards.

Malaria occurs in some parts of the east and
northeast regions of South Africa. Visitors to
these areas should take the necessary
precautions. If in any doubt, consult a
pharmacist or doctor.


Most shops operate between 08:30 and 17:00
daily and to 13:00 on Saturdays. Major shopping centres and convenience stores are
open seven days a week. Some emergency
pharmacies are open for extended hours.
Banks operate from 09:00 to 15:30 daily and from 08:30 to 11:00 on Saturdays.

Value Added Tax is charged at 14%. Non
residents, other than those from Swaziland,
Botswana and Namibia can claim refunds on
leaving the country. To do this a Tax invoice
showing the VAT amount charged must be
produced along with travel documents and the goods purchased. VAT refunds can be
claimed at major departure points like O.R.
Tambo International Airport, Cape Town
International Airport, Durban International
Airport, and all border posts except
Oranjemund. Major harbours at Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth and East London
also offer customs facilities.
